2018 new van sales fall year-on-year in Q1

smmt-logo-keylineRegistrations of new light commercial vehicles for the first quarter of 2018 show a year-on-year decline of 3.7 per cent compared to 2017, according to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT). The situation was not helped by a year-on-year drop of 5.6 per cent (59,764 compared to 63,316 in 2017) in March which took the Q1 total to 94,374; down from 97,970 the previous year.

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is Ford’s complete dominance of the sector, ably illustrated by the Best Sellers table below. So far this year it has increased its LCV year-on-year registration tally by 4.3 per cent, taking its market share to 35.5 per cent. Volkswagen remains firmly positioned in second place with year-to-date 12.0 per cent share of the cake.

Vans weighing less than 2.0 tonne, pick-ups and 4x4s all saw demand increase in March, up 1.8, 6.8 and 73.9 per cent respectively. This failed to offset a decline for medium and heavier vans, however, with the 2.0t – 2.5t sector down 2.0 per cent and 2.5- to 3.5-tonners falling 10.5 per cent.

“A decline in the important plate-change month of March is a concern and we need the right economic conditions to restore market stability and encourage buyers to invest in new commercial vehicles,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes. “The new van market is a key barometer of business confidence and while uncertainty remains, a degree of fluctuation in demand is to be expected this year.”
