All-electric Renault Master Z.E. range unveiled

Renault Master ZERenault has announced full details of its battery-powered zero emission Master range and it will be joining the Kangoo Z.E. in UK showrooms in Q4, 2018. The timing couldn’t be better as more and more cities are looking to introduce zero emission zones and some operators will have no choice but to include electric or electric/hybrid vehicles on their fleets to comply; especially if tendering for local council contracts.

With a gross vehicle weight of 3.1t, Master Z.E. will be available as a front-wheel drive panel van with a choice of four models — L1H1, L1H2, L2H2 and L3H2 — and as a L2H1 and L3H1 platform cab ready for the conversion market. Panel van load capacities range from 8.0m3 to 13.0m3 with gross payloads of 1.0t to 1.1t while the platform cabs have bodywork/payload capacities of 1,370kg and 1,350kg.

Renault Master ZEThe drivetrain comes from the recently updated Kangoo Z.E. 33 and Zoe passenger car and features a high density 33kWh lithium ion battery pack mounted under the load floor and 57kW/76hp R75 high energy efficiency electric motor. Renault quotes a real-world operating range of 75 miles and it can be fully recharged in six hours using a 32A/7.4kW supply. Maximum speed is 72mph, reducing to 50mph if Eco Mode is activated which extends the Master Z.E.’s range by reducing acceleration.

How much is it going to cost, you ask. Well, like all electric vehicles it ain’t cheap, but the upfront price has to be weighed against the much lower running costs compared to an equivalent diesel-powered model. Master Z.E. will start at around £52,000 (basic price, excluding VAT) for a L2H1 platform cab (including battery purchase and before any grants have been applied, currently running at a maximum of £8,000)) with a panel van closer to £60,000. It’s a great deal of money, but competitive compared to the opposition; Iveco Daily Electric, LDV Maxus electric, Mercedes-Benz eVito and the upcoming new eSprinter, not to mention the Volkswagen eCrafter due for launch later in 2018.
