BT Openreach puts electric vans to the test
BT Openreach, which is responsible for the nationwide Local BT network, has begun trials of four electric Ford and Peugeot vans. Converted to battery power by Smith Electric and Allied Vehicles respectively they are restricted to a top speed of 70mph and can cover up to 100 miles between recharges. The vans will be clocking up an average of 60 to 65 miles a day.Two vans are based in Milton Keynes, one of the first cities or towns across the UK piloting charging points for electric vehicles, with the remainder operating in Stratford, East London. If the trials prove successful BT plans to roll them out more widely across its 23,400-strong national fleet.
