Diesel pump price breaks £6/gallon barrier
Thanks to a 0.76p/litre rise in fuel duty and VAT increasing to 20 per cent, the cost of a litre of diesel at the pump has risen to £6 per gallon; at least it has in south west London where the picture was taken. And the situation is going to get worse, not better. Not only is there a 1p/litre fuel duty hike scheduled for April, but the price of a barrel of crude is likely to increase substantially. Currently standing at around $90 it is expected to head towards the all-time high of $145 recorded in July 2008.
“The Chancellor is treating the road freight sector as a bottomless well from which cash to bolster the public finances can be drawn,” said Simon Chapman from the Freight Transport Association. “At the same time he has embarked on a savage set of cuts to transport infrastructure which will see spending on national road schemes fall by 45 per cent and local authority budgets for capital schemes slashed.”
