FairFuelUK keeps up pressure prior to Budget
Motorists’ campaigner Quentin Willson has presented a symbolic cheque to parliament for £26.2bn on behalf of hard-pressed UK road users. There is just one week to go before Chancellor George Osbourne presents his first Budget on 23 March.Accompanied by a commuter with a fuel bill bigger than his mortgage, a struggling road haulier, the CEOs of the Freight Transport and Road Haulage Associations, two student nurses and several other businessmen Willson said: “This massive cheque for £26.2bn shows just how much UK van drivers, hauliers and motorists pay the exchequer each year in fuel duty alone — this does not even include the additional VAT or other road taxes. Businesses and motorists cannot pay any more. The Chancellor must listen to our campaign and scrap the April Fuel Duty Hike and bring in measures to stabilise fuel prices so that they are affordable.”
All MPs have received a letter from the FairFuelUK Campaign along with two more ‘cheques’ illustrating what a typical motorist and a registered truck contribute each year in fuel duty alone; £1,292 and £28,000 respectively.Want to know your business or personal annual Fuel Tax contribution? Visit the FairFuelUK web site and download the Excel Fuel Tax calculator that reveals the duty and VAT, based on mileage driven each year, vehicle MPG, fuel price/litre and the current VAT rate. Over 10,000 people have downloaded it in five days and campaign leader Peter Carroll is urging everyone to e-mail or write to their MP to point out the huge personal cost in Fuel Tax they are giving back to the government every year.
