Ford updates Transit Custom for 2018

Ford Transit Custom 2018Ford has announced a round of significant internal and exterior styling, active safety and Sync mid-life revisions for Transit Custom. Production of the newcomers starts in late 2017, five years after the Custom was introduced, with customer deliveries starting in early 2018.

Taking design cues from the latest generation of passenger cars, Custom gets a new front-end and a completely reworked cab interior with improved ergonomics and expanded storage. High specification models will feature distinctive new signature LED daytime running lights, HID Xenon headlamps and a floating, tablet-inspired eight-inch colour touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system that can be operated with pinch and swipe gestures..

Ford Transit Custom 2018A host of new electronic driver aids will be available, including Intelligent Speed Limiter, which enables automatic adjustment of maximum speed to remain within legal limits using a Traffic Sign Recognition system to detect speed limit signs. The new models also offer Ford’s Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert; this warns drivers reversing out of a parking space of vehicles that may soon be crossing behind them.

These are in addition to the comprehensive suite of active safety technologies already available on Custom, including the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection emergency braking system, Lane Keeping Alert, Side Wind Stabilisation and Adaptive Cruise Control.

ECOnetic
Ford Transit Custom 2018Engine line-up remains the same as the current line-up; the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel at 105hp, 130hp and 170hp driving the front wheels via either a six speed manual or SelectShift  automatic transmission. A new model variant , however, has been added to the line-up; the ECOnetic. It’s a 300 Series short-wheelbase van fitted with a version of the 105hp diesel with a unique calibration and Auto-Stop-Start, low rolling resistance tyres, Ford’s Acceleration Control feature and a fixed 62mph speed limiter. It delivers 148g/km CO2 emissions and 49.6mpg, a six per cent improvement over the most efficient current Custom.

Sport
Transit Custom will continue to be available with a choice of two roof heights, two wheelbase options, a gross vehicle weight range from 2.6 tonne to 3.4 tonne offering payloads up to 1,450kg and body styles encompassing van, kombi and double-cab-in-van. A range of Sport variants will be available, based around the 170hp diesel and offering a choice of eight different body and seating options. The Sport’s signature twin bonnet stripes and exterior body kit have been redesigned for the new models, including two-tone stripes in black with orange or silver accents. The sporting nature is carried through to the cab with partial leather Ebony interior trim that combines new embossed fabric inserts and leather seat bolsters.

Looking farther ahead, 2019 will see the introduction of the zero-emission capable Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) derivative of Transit Custom. It is scheduled to begin trials with fleet customers in London towards the end of 2017 (see related stories).
