Future Car Challenge 2011 trial run a success

Three crews have completed a trial run for the Brighton to London 2011 RAC Future Car Challenge (FCC) without a hitch. Taking place on Saturday 5 November, the day before the iconic London to Brighton veteran car run, the FCC sets out to establish which vehicles can complete the 60-mile run using the least amount of energy.VansA2Z triumphed last year in a Nicholson McLaren Electric Citroën Nemo (see Feature) taking the laurels in the light commercial vehicle category; despite the event's name vans are more than welcome to take part. This year we will be behind the wheel of a Renault Kangoo ZE in a bid to make it two in a row.
The trial run also acted as an opportunity to field test the special data-logging equipment that will be installed in each participating vehicle to measure how much energy has been consumed during the challenge. Supplied by General Engine Management Systems the data-loggers will measure current and voltage (in the case of electric vehicles) or fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These devices were fitted to the cars used on the trial run and performed faultlessly.
