Hammersmith flyover reopens for vans
Closed on 23 December 2011 due to the discovery of impending catastrophic structural failure, the Hammersmith flyover is now open for light traffic; well, one lane in each direction is functional. There’s a 2.0m width restriction to block access to trucks and coaches.Opened in 1961 the flyover on the A4 is one the major arterial routes into London from the west, including Heathrow Airport, and will not reopen fully for at least four months. It will remain operational during the Olympics so that the synchronised scrabble team is not inconvenienced, but will then require further partial closures to complete the work.
How Transport for London (TfL) allowed the flyover to deteriorate to such an extent is beyond belief, but undoubtedly no one will be blamed for this example of complete incompetence. As always it’s the tax-paying public and businesses that suffer. Avoid the area like the plague, it is still chaos.
