Merc unveils radical Unimog design concept
Among the four-wheel drive truck fraternity the Merc Unimog (Universal-Motor-Gerät) is a legend. To celebrate it’s 60th anniversary, Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks (MBS) has rolled out a stunningly futuristic, and very green, design concept. And believe it or not it’s a runner; the chassis, suspension and drivetrain are from a U5000.The concept, called simply ‘60 Years Unimog', is claimed to display the future form language of Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle design. Combining the past and future of the Unimog, the MBS development team, the Daimler commercial vehicle designers in Sindelfingen and a model designing partner have created an avant-garde vehicle that retains the inherent functionality and capabilities of this now iconic vehicle.
“We have taken the Unimog-DNA with its unique concept features 100 per cent into consideration when creating this design concept,” said Bertrand Janssen from the Daimler department for commercial vehicle design. Janssen’s team was inspired by the poison dart frog in the creation of the green concept. Just like the Unimog, the poison dart frog is extremely mobile both in water and on land, but the amphibian’s colour also represents a link between past and future; the very first Unimog to roll off the assembly line in 1951 was also finished in green, as were many of the subsequent 26 generations.
