New Caddy Racer Van unveiled at CV Show
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ director Simon Elliott will once again slip behind the wheel of a Caddy Racer Van to compete in this year’s Volkswagen Racing Cup series. But it’s a very different proposition in 2011.For a start it’s the new-shape Caddy and this time it’s got a 270hp/512Nm 2.0-litre petrol lump under the bonnet, rather than the diesel of its predecessor. This will make it much more competitive against the wide selection of similarly powered VW cars it’s racing against. “I got sick of being overtaken on the straights,” said Elliott.
Other changes include a six-speed Volkswagen Racing quick-shift gear selector, multilink rear suspension from the Golk, three-way adjustable race dampers, ventilated disc brakes all-round and a bespoke Milltek Sport exhaust system. The 18in alloy wheels are fitted with Hankook racing slicks.
Commenting on his new steed ahead of the season, Elliott explained: “The new Caddy has started life strongly since its launch and has already started winning awards, so the Caddy Racer will hopefully add to the trophy cabinet! We learnt a lot through the developments made with the original Racer, and initial tests with the new van have been extremely promising. This really is a clear demonstration of Brilliant Made Better; I just can’t wait to get back out on track.”The season opens this weekend at Oulton Park (25 April) and then moves on to Snetterton (15 May), Brands Hatch (19 June), Zandvoort (Holland, 2 July), Rockingham (4 September) and Donington Park (25 Sept). The final rounds take place at Silverstone on 9 October. Full details of the Volkswagen Racing Cup can be found here.
