New Vauxhall Vivaro slated for mid-2019 launch

Vauxhall Luton PlantVauxhall’s new owners, the PSA Groupe, has committed to building the new Vivaro at the existing production facility in Luton, Bedfordshire. Due to begin rolling off the line by the middle of 2019, the next generation Vivaro will be a re-badged version of the current Citroën Dispatch, Peugeot Expert and Toyota Proace. The move brings to an end the long-standing joint-development deal, dating back to 2001, with Renault which resulted in the current Trafic, Vivaro, Nissan NV300 and Fiat Talento.

This is great news for the Luton plant, the future of which has been the subject of much debate since the PSA Groupe took over Opel/Vauxhall last year. The plant produced 60,000 Opel/Vauxhall Vivaros in 2017, but following substantial investment the aim is to increase production capacity to 100,000 vehicles per year.

It also closely follows the next generation Combo light van being moved onto the same platform as its Citroën and Peugeot counterparts — Berlingo and Partner — replacing the current Fiat Doblò-based models. The larger Movano, which is derived from the Renault Master, will continue under the current partnership, though this was launched in 2008 and is likely to be coming close to the end of its life cycle. Citroën and Peugeot’s large vans, the Relay and Boxer, were co-developed with, and built by Fiat, and launched in 2010.

“Performance is the trigger for sustainability and I would like to thank all stakeholders involved and underline the open mindset of our union partners, as well as that of the UK Government,” said Carlos Tavares, chairman of the managing board of Groupe PSA. “This is a major milestone for the future of the Luton plant and a key enabler to serve our ambitions in the commercial vehicle market, guaranteeing customers the best offering in this segment.”
