New van registrations falter in July
Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) figures show that sales of light commercials up to 3.5 tonnes dropped 0.8 per cent month-on-month in July compared to 2010, with vans under 2.0t showing the biggest decline at 18.1 per cent. This brings to an end a run of 17 consecutive monthly rises. The situation would have been worse if Ford had not had such a good month, selling 5,405 units; a month-on-month rise of 28.7 per cent and giving it a market share of 31.5 per cent. Volkswagen was second with 2,213 registrations and Vauxhall completed the top three on 1,998. Renault was the biggest loser, down 46.3 per cent month-on-month.
Year-to-date figures, however, remain good. Standing at 150,400 this equates to an increase of 20.7 per cent compared to the same period for 2010.
“July saw the first drop in the volume of vans registered following 17 consecutive monthly increases, reflecting a more uncertain period for the economy,” said Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT. “Truck figures rose by 27.5 per cent, the tenth successive monthly rise and while industry remains cautious, expectations for the remainder of 2011 are optimistic, with van and truck figures looking set to reach 300,000 units by year-end.”
