Official new van registration figures supplied by the Society of Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) show a small 1.2 per cent year-on-year growth for January (21,363) compared with the same month in 2016, which itself was a record-breaking year.
Heavy vans weighing between 2.5t and 3.5t, which make up the bulk of the market, rose 5.6 per cent in January. Pick-ups popularity, meanwhile, continued to grow following a successful 2016, with registrations increasing 28.9 per cent.
Ford continued its amazing performance with January sales of 7,709, beating the combined total of number two seller Volkswagen (2,333), third placed Citroën (2,071) and fourth position Vauxhall (2,003). The top three best sellers overall were the Ford Transit Custom (3,076), Transit (1,790) and Transit Connect.
“Vans are the backbone of British business so it is positive to see the strength of the market continue into 2017,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes. “With the success of the sector so closely linked to business confidence, government must ensure the conditions that have delivered this growth are maintained.”
