New van sales show slight decline in 2017

smmt-logo-keylineRegistrations of new light commercials up to 3.5t fell 3.6 per cent year-on-year in 2017 compared with 2016 according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT). It is the first time the annual total has dropped since 2012, despite a rise of 2.9 per cent in December (28,016) which took the 2017 final tally to 362,149. There’s no need for panic in the marketplace, however, as 2017 was still the third best year for LCV sales in a decade.

Ford once again ruled the roost, shifting an impressive 117,831 LCVs (up to 3.5t), making 2017 its best year ever. To illustrate just how dominant Ford was last year its record-breaking sales exceeded the combined total of second-placed Volkswagen (41,474), third position Peugeot (36,176) and fourth-placed Mercedes (33,889).

The markets for vans under 2.0t and heavy vans weighing 2.5t – 3.5t drove the overall annual decline, falling 20.3 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively. On the upside, however, demand for pick-ups and smaller vans weighing 2.0t – 2.5t saw year-on-year rises of 7.8 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively compared with 2016.

“While the market has slowed in 2017, this was in line with expectations and demand remains at a high level,” said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes. “In fact, LCV registrations have increased 62.5 per cent since 2010. For 2018, however, we expect the economic and political uncertainty to continue to affect the market so government must rebuild business confidence and encourage operators to invest in new vehicles given fleet renewal is the fastest way to reduce overall emissions.”
