Renault names EV charging kit supplier
Renault UK has announced that British Gas will be its preferred supplier of electric vehicle charging points for homes and businesses. This follows the agreement with Renault’s Alliance partner, Nissan, to be the preferred supplier of charge points for its LEAF car. Renault’s first EV to come to market in the UK will be the Kangoo Van which becomes available from autumn this year.Customers will pay from £995 (incl VAT) for the domestic installation of a charging point, which is more convenient and safer than plugging vehicles directly into the home supply. It also cuts the charging time by a third. Research indicates that by 2020, 59 per cent of charging will be done at home, compared to 32 per cent at work and just nine per cent will use public charging.
British Gas has also recently announced an electricity tariff designed specifically for EV owners. This will make it cheaper to charge vehicles overnight. The new tariff is being trialled with customers this summer and will be fully available from the beginning of 2012. All customers on the tariff will have a smart meter installed which will give them access to flexible ‘time of use’ tariffs.
