First unveiled at the CV Operators Show back in April, the revised Piaggio Porter microvan will be powered by an all-new 1.2-litre, Euro 5-compliant, common rail turbodiesel engine.Developed in conjunction with UK engineering specialists Ricardo it’s a two-cylinder, four-stroke unit and for the European market comes with a diesel particulate filter as standard. It’s a world first for this type of engine to meet the latest Euro emission regulations.
With a power output of 63hp and peak torque of 140Nm at 1,800rpm Ricardo is claiming long service intervals, low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of 125g/km for the new engine.
What remains uncertain at the moment, however, is the situation regarding the UK importer. Vestatec was exhibiting the revised Porter — including battery-powered versions — at the 2010 CV Operators Show. But there have been no subsequent announcements and the main Piaggio web site does not have a link to an importer in the UK.
Apart from the new diesel, revisions to the Porter include a new front-end, electric power steering and a redesigned cab.
