Our Verdict
Not the most obvious choice if you’re looking for a 4x4 van, but one that’s well worth considering.
While SsangYong’s name isn’t one that instantly springs to the fore when you’re thinking about 4x4 vans, the South Korean manufacturer’s offerings in this sector are nonetheless worth considering. Among them is the five-door Kyron C-S. Based on the Kyron car, but minus its back seats and with a cargo floor fitted, it offers a 2.4m3 load bay and can handle a 530kg payload.
Pop open the bonnet and you’ll find a 141hp/310Nm 2.0-litre diesel married to a five-speed manual gearbox. All that’s required to engage four-wheel drive is twist a knob on the dashboard, then twist it a little further to engage a low-ratio set of gears.
While the cabin’s interior looks a tad strange — why the sword-style knuckle guard on the handbrake lever? — there is no denying that it’s well-equipped. Climate control and electric windows are among the fixtures and fittings.
Performance isn’t an issue, but it’s a pity that SsangYong doesn’t fit a six-speed gearbox. At least the five-speeder provides a competent gearchange and the handling, while not outstanding, is more than adequate. Not so the ride, which can be choppy; especially when there’s no weight in the back.
Off-road Kyron C-S will get you up a muddy farm track peppered with potholes, but is not really designed for the sort of demanding terrain a Land Rover Defender revels in.
Service intervals are set at 10,000 miles and a three-year/60,000-mile warranty is provided.
