SsangYong sets sights on UK pick-up market
Korean manufacturer SsangYong took the covers off the SUT 1, its concept Sports Utility Truck, at the Geneva Motor Show. An evolution of the current Actyon Sports, the double cab pick-up is scheduled to begin rolling off the line later this year and go on sale across Europe in early 2012. And that includes the UK.Although displayed as a ‘concept’ don’t be surprised if the final production models bear it an uncanny resemblance. It’s a bit late in the day to alter the styling dramatically.
It will be available in a choice of rear- and selectable four-wheel drive and be powered by an all-new 2.0-litre Euro 5 turbodiesel. Capable of producing 155hp it develops peak torque of 360Nm across a 1,500rpm to 2,800rpm plateau. There will be a choice of six-speed manual and automatic transmissions and SsangYong is aiming to hit a CO2 emissions target of around 195g/km.The body is mounted on a strong ladder-frame chassis with double wishbone suspension at the front, a five-link set-up at the rear and disc brakes all-round. Turning circle will be a minimum of 12.4m.
Accessed via a ‘sprung-hinge’ tailgate, the floor offers 2m2 of load area. Official payloads have not been set, but gross vehicle weights go from 2,640kg to 2,740kg and kerb weights range between 1,854kg and 2,000kg.Specification is expected to be generous with ESP, driver and passenger air bags, remote central locking and electric windows and folding door mirrors all standard features. Add air conditioning, alloy wheels and cruise control to these and it should represent a high value-for-money pick-up by the time it reaches these shores.
