Transit Custom scores five-star safety rating
In a world first for a one-tonne van, the all-new Ford Transit Custom has achieved a maximum five-star crash safety rating in the stringent Euro NCAP tests. It also applies to the passenger-carrying Torneo Custom.Transit Custom received an overall score of 77 per cent after being subjected to Euro NCAP’s new heavy vehicle crash tests. It also achieved a best–in-class 90 per cent for child protection, 84 per cent for adult protection and 71 per cent for safety features. On top of this it was also awarded the first-ever Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for technology available on a commercial vehicle. These include Lane Keeping Alert and SYNC with Emergency Assistance. Lane Keeping Alert vibrates the steering wheel and triggers an alert in the instrument binnacle to warn the driver if the system detects the vehicle is drifting out of lane. SYNC with Emergency Assistance helps occupants call the local emergency services operator (in 26 languages, spoken in 40 European regions) in the event of an accident or breakdown. It uses information from the on-board GPS unit, map and mobile network to pinpoint the location and calls emergency services via a Bluetooth connected mobile phone.
To put achieving a five-star rating in context Euro NCAP has also tested the Citroën Dispatch/Fiat Scudo/Peugeot Expert, Hyundai iLoad and Nissan Primastar/Renault Trafic/Vauxhall Vivaro. They scored three, three and two stars respectively.
