VW e-Crafter begins real-world trials in Europe

VW e-CrafterVolkswagen Commercial Vehicles has provided battery-powered e-Crafters to selected operators who will be testing the new electric vans in everyday use until mid-2018. Based in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Sweden, they are a mixture of package delivery companies, energy suppliers, trades people and individual retailers whose vehicles cover between 70 – 100km per day, sometimes with an operating cycle involving hundreds of stops and starts.

VW’s e-Crafter has been tailored precisely to meet typical city operations and distances with a 100kW power output, a range of around 160km and a top speed limited to 90kph. A 35.8kWh lithium ion power pack is fully integrated into the chassis and doesn’t intrude into the load area. It can be charged to 80 per cent capacity in 45 minutes using a fast charge 40kW DC outlet and to 100 per cent via a 7kW AC wall box.

On sale from September 2018, e-Crafter will come fitted with Park Assist with side protection, a multifunctional camera and a rear view camera system. Other standard features include automatic climate control (Climatronic), heated comfort seats, sat nav, mobile phone integration and LED headlights.
