Van registrations remain strong through May

smmt-logo-2011Official figures released by the Society of Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that sales of light commercials up to 3.5t in May grew by 17.3 per cent when compared to the same month in 2010. A total of 19,966 were registered.

The year-to-date figure of 110,388 is even more impressive with an increase of 26.7 per cent compared to the same period in 2010. The 3.5t to 6.0t sector performed badly in May, however, with a year-on-year drop of 37.6 per cent. It’s showing a year-to-date decrease of 22.6 per cent compared to 2010.

Year-to-date totals put Ford firmly in the number one spot with 30,304 registrations which represents a 33.9 per cent improvement on 2010. Vauxhall is currently running second with sales of 15,303 while Volkswagen is snapping at its heels on 12,674.

Truck sales continue to grow with 13,439 shifted so far this year, an impressive year-on-year improvement of 46.9 per cent.

“May’s van and truck registration totals showed sustained confidence in the commercial vehicle market,” said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt. “Heavy trucks, led by artics, again demonstrated the most robust growth in the month, with artics up strongly by 61 per cent. Vans were up 17 per cent in May, illustrating the ongoing resurgence in the market.”
