Van sales show positive growth in September
According to official figures released by the Society of Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) a total of 38,644 sales for light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonne were registered in September, a month-on-month increase of 9.5 per cent compared to 2010. This takes the running total for 2011 to 199,684, a year-on-year rise of 18.5 per cent. As usual Ford took the lion’s share of the sales in September, clocking up a total of 10,724; a market share of 27.8 per cent and a month-on-month increase of 12.1 per cent. Vauxhall was second with a 12.0 per cent slice thanks to 4,772 registrations and Volkswagen came in a healthy third with sales of 4,481; an 11.6 per cent share.
“Confidence returned to the commercial vehicle market in 2011 and the September market continues the upward trend, growing 8.8 per cent on last year,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “The future state of the economy is certainly a concern, but it’s clear that owners and operators are currently investing in new, fuel-efficient vehicles to help weather the storm of high fuel prices.”
