Van sales sink again in August
Despite signs of recovery in July, LCV registrations in August dropped 12.5 per cent month-on-month compared with 2011, according to the official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders. August sales of 9,308 take the 2012 year-to-date total to 148,007 which is 13,033 — or 8.1 per cent — short of the 2011 figure.Of the top three players Ford and Volkswagen were hit the hardest. Ford easily retained the number one slot, but its total of 2,268 represents a month-on-month deficit of 23.5 per cent compared with 2011. VW’s 1,060 registrations equates to a drop of 23.9 per cent. Vauxhall fared slightly better. It shifted 1,058 LCVs, a fall of 12.9 per cent.
The heavier end of the CV market remains buoyant, however, and the SMMT remains upbeat. “Trucks have performed well throughout 2012 with volumes up 20 per cent for the year-to-date, but vans have struggled and look set to end the year almost 10 per cent behind last year's levels,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive. “Last year we saw heavy trucks leading recovery, now medium-weight trucks are performing well, up 40 per cent for the year so far. The economic situation in Europe and around the world is far from certain, but if business and buyer confidence improves, we'd anticipate the van market recovering in 2013.”
