Vans of the Year Awards 2013 - Pick-Up

Pick-Up of the Year 2013
Nominations: Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi L200 and Toyota Hilux

Isuzu D-Max

voty-2013-pickupTough times in the economy mean that work-orientated pick-up buyers need a vehicle that can tackle a hard day’s graft and come back for more the next day. They want a workhorse, not a show-pony, and we reckon that Isuzu’s solidly built D-Max load-lugger could be just what they are looking for. It’s been awarded our 2013 Pick-up of the Year accolade.

Making its UK debut at last year’s Commercial Vehicle Show, D-Max succeeded the highly-regarded Rodeo. Unlike the latest generation pick-ups from Ford and Volkswagen it retains the external dimensions of the traditional one-tonne truck and is all the better for it. It feels more nimble and less bulky to drive, while retaining an impressive work ethic.

Under the bonnet there’s a really stunning 163hp/400Nm 2.5-litre twin-turbo common rail diesel working in conjunction with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox; both newly-developed. Four-wheel drive is engaged electronically and there is a set of low ratio gears. Fuel economy is 10 per cent better than the predecessor’s says Isuzu; an improvement worthy of note given the frighteningly-high price of diesel.

isuzu-d-max-2013-votyThere’s a choice of three distinct body styles, offering a trio of load lengths. While the four-door five-seater double cab gets most of the attention, there’s a standard two-door single cab — also available with just rear-wheel drive —along with a stretched single cab, a variant not previously offered, with rearward-opening half-width doors on both sides.

Four different trim grades are marketed with even the entry-level workaday models featuring air conditioning, electric windows, and front, side, and curtain airbags along with ABS, Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control System. Braked towing capacity is high at up to 3.0 tonnes while payload capacity ranges from just over a tonne to in excess of 1.1 tonnes.

D-Max is a more than worthy successor to Rodeo. There’s a seemingly endless supply of torque, a full choice of body styles and trim levels, it’s an accomplished mud-plugger, it can match load capabilities with the best and its external dimensions make it feel nimble to drive. The icing on the cake is the generous five year/125,000-mile warranty
